SUmmary Deforestation and logging have been known for causing many issues; one being the increases in global warming. Some scientists believe that with better logging practices, the amount of carbon emissions will decrease and ultimately slow global warming. A group of conservationists travel to Indonesia to work with loggers and show them the benefits of better logging practices. One method is to avoid cutting trees with low commercial value. These trees, if cut, will end up on the roadside because they are not need economically. Another method is to shorten the width of the roads used for logging. Every little change helps in order to help the environment as a whole.
Reflection I chose this article because I believe that deforestation and logging are significant causes of global warming. People tend to focus on the effects of burning fossil fuels and forget that trees store large amounts of carbon; cutting them down and releasing all of the carbon is not a good idea. I think it is interesting how conservationists worked with loggers in order to encourage better logging practices. It's good to see this type of communication and cooperation. Oddly enough, it reminds me of democrats and republicans. If both political parties actually worked together, Americans would see so much change in a short amount of time.
The next steps are to implement this strategy to other sites of deforestation and logging. people need to realize that the more we destroy forests, the faster global warming happens. We also have to give specific locations, like rainforests, special attention and care. In addition to global warming, forest destruction decreases biodiversity and this will lead to vulnerable ecosystems that can potentially collapse. |
